Severian, Eata, Roche and Drotte have just come back from a swim in the Gyoll, and have to pass through the necropolis to re-enter the Citadel. Severian finds Vodalus and a group of his followers digging up the body of a woman. They are attacked by a group of volunteer guards. Severian takes one of them by surprise before he can kill Vodalus, and Vodalus rewards him for his bravery.
